Andrew Hem Brings Home the Bacon

When Andrew Hem showed me his most recent painting, I realized that he'd stepped up his game to a whole new level. In this startlingly vivid scenario, Andrew placed himself within a stunning amalgamation of the gloriously stratified workspace of the legendary painter Francis Bacon and his own inspiration-strewn studio overlooking the rooftops of Koreatown.

"Bring Home the Bacon"

On Thursday, January 3rd, the painting will be on view at San Francisco's Spoke Art Gallery in the 2nd Annual Supersonic Electronic Invitational art show, which will also include Erratic Phenomena favorites like João Ruas, Tessar Lo and Nimit Malavia.

A Room to Read in Cambodia, Redux

In the spirit of the holiday, I thought today would be a good time to make another plug for my favorite charity, Room to Read. You might recall that last December, I donated the cost of a year of secondary school education for a promising Cambodian girl. In many rural districts in Cambodia, less than 5% of girls have the opportunity to complete secondary school, and only 25% of women know how to read and write. It's vital to these communities that young girls achieve literacy, for with education comes greater prosperity for their families, and the opportunity to pass down their knowledge to their own children when they become mothers.

Last year, I also convinced my company to fund the construction of a children's library in Cambodia through Room to Read. The library has just been completed in a small village on the Mekong Delta called Chheu Teal Srot Kraom, and you can see pictures of children exploring their newly widened horizons at our website.

This year, I have donated another year for a Cambodian girl's education. Maybe she will become a doctor who returns to heal her community, or an engineer who brings clean drinking water into her village for the first time, or a teacher who gives the gift of literacy to hundreds of children. She could turn out to be a novelist, poet or painter, lifting the hearts of a weary people struggling through a 30-year recovery from one of the worst genocides the world has ever known. Perhaps she will grow into a leader, and find a new way forward for her people which benefits the neediest, rather than the most powerful.

If you are interested in creating a brighter world by funding literacy and education in underdeveloped nations, you can target your donation through Room to Read toward the country and educational focus you find most appealing.

Wishing everyone a very happy year to come!

Andrew Hem's D2R Box Sets

Now that Andrew Hem's Dreams Towards Reality clamshell edition with graphite drawings has officially debuted at Nucleus Gallery, I can give you more details on the deluxe box set edition that is being offered through Zero+ Publishing. Created in an edition of just nine, each handcrafted bamboo box features an different character painted on the lid, and contains five additional works of art, plus a signed and numbered book encased in a clamshell.

When you crack open the box, you will find an original 5x7 matted painting enclosed in a cloth portfolio, an assemblage of 12 matchboxes, a landscape painting, a small character portrait, and a jar sculpture inside a smaller bamboo box embellished with Andrew's handpainted text designs.

Only the first edition (pictured) has been completed right now, but the entire edition will be ready for shipment by early January. The collection of six original artworks is currently priced at $2500, but Zero+ scales its prices higher as the edition sells out, so if you're interested, don't procrastinate... the edition is already more than half sold, sight unseen.

Dreams Towards Reality: Coming True Tomorrow!

It's finally here! The launch event for my new book with Andrew Hem, Dreams Towards Reality, is tomorrow night at Nucleus Gallery.

At the last moment, Andrew decided to hand-paint each of the box set covers, rather than having them laser-cut. That means that each box set will include six original pieces of art, including a sculpture, four paintings and a matchbox collage. You can see a couple of sneak peeks of the box set art below.

Please come out tomorrow night to get your book signed and check out the first box set edition, as well as the 30 limited edition drawings!

Andrew Hem Book Signing and Exhibition

Please join me this Saturday, October 20th for the Andrew Hem: Dreams Towards Reality book release event at Nucleus Gallery in Alhambra. After a year and a half of working on this project with Andrew, our big day is fast approaching! Besides having your book signed and embellished by Andrew, you will also be able to view the original artwork he created for the special editions and a mural designed especially for the exhibition.

The Dreams Towards Reality clamshell edition, which is limited to 30 signed and numbered copies, is bound in luxuriously textured Japanese cloth, and the spine is embellished with the book's title written in Khmer script. Each clamshell holds a cloth portfolio that protects a mysterious and evocative drawing, many of which will inspire the paintings in Andrew's next exhibition. Hope to see you there!

Tessar Lo's "live on, no evil"

This Saturday, September 29th, marks the opening of my dear friend Tessar Lo's next solo show with Amsterdam's venerable Jaski Gallery. The small works on paper he created during his recent three-month sojourn in his native Indonesia describe his spiritual encounters and dreamy inward journey while immersed in the lush world of his childhood.

Andrew Hem's Art Attack

A couple of weeks ago, SoulPancake proprietor and hipster tastemaker Rainn Wilson sent a camera crew to Andrew Hem's studio to shoot a timelapse video of him painting a small piece for the Dreams Towards Reality special edition box set.

Dabs Myla & Friends' "Marvelous Expeditions"

If you know Dabs Myla, it's easy to see why they have so many interesting friends — they're the sweetest people on earth, but they also have impeccable skills with a brush or spraycan and a wicked sense of humor. You'll see it in spades in their upcoming curated group exhibition at Thinkspace, "Marvelous Expeditions," which opens on Saturday, September 1st. Centered around a travel theme, it will incorporate work by all the friends they have made while journeying around the art world. Stay tuned for more updates as the show approaches!

And if you happen to be heading along Sunset Boulevard near the Chateau Marmont, keep an eye out for their new piece celebrating the ethos of Timothy Leary and the Merry Pranksters.

Andrew Hem in Phnom Penh

It is my pleasure to announce that Andrew Hem has been selected by the State Department's Art In Embassies division to be part of an exhibition at the U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The curators have chosen three paintings which touch on aspects of Andrew's native Cambodia, including the ubiquitous presence of the spirit world, the devastating losses of the Khmer Rouge genocide, and the strength and perseverance of Cambodia's women. For the next three years, these paintings will be on view at official state functions in U.S. Ambassador William Todd's residence. I hope they will inspire contemplation and empathy towards the people of Cambodia.
